Fattoria di Rodano makes this Chianti Classico from Sangiovese grown in a south-facing vineyard at Viacosta, in Tuscany. Farmed organically, fermented in large wooden vats and aged in American oak, it shows bright cherry, plum and the savoury, earthy grip of classic Chianti.
Description
Fattoria di Rodano sits in the Chianti Classico zone of Tuscany, with its best fruit coming from a south-facing vineyard at Viacosta, the estate's prized site. The wine is built around Sangiovese, the backbone of Chianti, with the traditional local grapes Canaiolo and Colorino in the blend. Sangiovese is a thin-skinned, late-ripening variety that gives high acidity, firm tannins and the savoury cherry character that defines the region. The south-facing exposure ensures full ripening, while the elevation and stony Tuscan soils preserve freshness and lend a mineral, earthy quality. Farming is organic. The grapes are fermented in large wooden vats and the wine is aged in American oak, with the long barrel ageing allowing slow oxygen exchange that softens the firm Sangiovese tannins and adds a gentle spice and vanilla note without masking the fruit. The colour is bright ruby tending to garnet. The nose shows red cherry, plum and red berries with dried herbs, leather and a savoury, earthy edge, and the palate is medium to full bodied at 14.5 percent, with bright acidity, firm tannins and a long, savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. The acidity makes it a natural match for tomato-based dishes and grilled red meats.
