Portia makes this Roble in Ribera del Duero from Tempranillo grown at around 820 metres across four estate sites. Four months in French oak give a youthful red of blackberry, bramble and gentle spice with the region’s savoury core.
Description
Portia Roble is a Tempranillo from D.O. Ribera del Duero made by the Portia winery. The fruit is drawn from the Roa, Gumiel de Mercado, Sotillo de la Ribera and Villanueva de Gumiel estates at an average altitude of around 820 metres, with yields held to about 5,000 kilos per hectare. Altitude defines this wine. At 820 metres the days are warm enough to ripen Tempranillo but the nights are cold, and that wide diurnal swing keeps acidity bright and fixes fresh fruit aromatics in the grape. The controlled yield concentrates flavour. After fermentation the wine spends four months in French oak. This short roble ageing is deliberate: enough barrel contact to round the tannins and add a touch of spice and vanilla, but brief enough to leave the fruit fresh and the wine ready to drink young. The colour is bright cherry red. The nose shows blackberry, bramble and blueberry with a savoury, earthy lift and gentle oak. The palate is medium bodied and supple, with soft tannin and a fresh finish. Serve at 15 to 17 degrees. It suits grilled meat, roast chicken and mushroom dishes.
