Description
Portia Crianza is a pure Tempranillo from D.O. Ribera del Duero, made by the Portia winery from fruit grown across four estates at Roa, Gumiel de Mercado, Sotillo de la Ribera and Villanueva de Gumiel. These plots sit at around 820 metres above sea level, where the high altitude drives a wide day-to-night temperature swing. Hot days ripen the fruit fully while cold nights lock in acidity and colour, the combination that gives Ribera del Duero its depth and firm structure. The modest yield of about 5,000 kilos per hectare concentrates the fruit further. After fermentation the wine spends 12 months in American oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange softens the firm tannin and the oak adds vanilla, coconut and sweet spice. The colour is deep, dark cherry. The nose shows ripe black plum and cherry over vanilla, dark chocolate and liquorice. The palate is full bodied and structured, with concentrated fruit, firm but ripe tannin and a long, spiced finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted ahead for a young vintage. It is built for grilled and roasted red meat.
