Portal del Montsant makes this unoaked Garnacha in Catalonia’s DO Montsant, the hill country ringing Priorat. A young, fresh red, it shows bright raspberry, red cherry and a savoury, herbal lift over the region’s stony soils.
Description
Portal del Montsant works in DO Montsant, the Catalan appellation that wraps around Priorat in north east Spain. This Garnacha is made young and without oak, so the focus stays on fresh fruit. Montsant's soils mix clay, limestone and patches of licorella slate, and the hillside vineyards see warm days cooled by altitude and the sea breeze, which keeps acidity in the ripe fruit. Garnacha buds and ripens well in this dry, sunny climate, giving generous red fruit and a gentle herbal character. Fermentation is followed by a short élevage in tank rather than barrel, which preserves the primary aromas and leaves the wine bright and immediate. The result is medium ruby, with raspberry, red cherry and strawberry over dried herbs, white pepper and a stony edge. The palate is juicy and supple, the tannins soft, the acidity fresh, the finish clean. This is a wine to enjoy young and lightly chilled. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees. It works with grilled pork, roast chicken and tomato based dishes.
