Honeyed red fruit, anise and eucalyptus-like oak with a minty, peppery finish, this 15 year old Port Mourant off the double wooden pot still saw a Port cask and lands dry and unsweetened at a punchy 58%.
Description
Released by Spirit of Rum for the Rumclub Private Selection, this is a 2010 Port Mourant with 15 years of age, distilled continentally rather than at origin. Port Mourant is the icon of Guyana: a double wooden pot still built from greenheart timber, source of the heaviest, oiliest Demerara profile of pungent anise, liquorice, dark fruit and sawn wood.
This bottling is unusually fruit-forward for the marque, with honeyed apple and red fruit framing the expected licorice and anise. A spell in a Port cask adds depth without sweetening the rum, which is certified unsweetened and bottled at 58%. The result keeps the classic Port Mourant signature in a relatively forgiving package, dry and warming, and makes a good entry point for anyone curious about the still without wanting it at its most extreme.
