A five year old Marie-Galante rum from Pere Labat, soft and gourmand with honey, maple and raisin over a round vanilla sweetness, ex-bourbon aged and bottled gently at 42%.
Description
A vintage 2017 Tatanka bottling from Poisson, the small and well-regarded Marie-Galante distillery behind Pere Labat. Marie-Galante sits under Guadeloupe's IGP rather than the Martinique AOC, but this is fresh-pressed cane-juice rum, aged five years in ex-bourbon oak and bottled at a soft 42%.
This is the gentle, dessert-leaning side of agricole rather than the grassy, peppery one. The nose is rounded, smooth and sweet with vanilla to the fore, and the palate follows with honey, maple and raisin in a soft, easy delivery. The finish stays fresh, smooth and rounded with a sweet edge. Tropical ageing has rounded the cane character into something mellow and approachable, an agreeable after-dinner pour. Added sugar is not declared; the honeyed sweetness reads largely as a maturation and cask effect on an inherently fruity spirit. An easy, crowd-friendly Marie-Galante that drinks well neat.
