A Marie-Galante agricole from Pere Labat finished in wine casks, fresh and fruity with raisin, citrus and vanilla over a vinous, lightly woody palate, pressed from fresh sugar-cane juice and bottled unsweetened at an easy 43%.
Description
Pere Labat is a small, well-regarded distillery on Marie-Galante, and this Silver Opus draws on a 2011 Guadeloupe vintage pressed from fresh sugar-cane juice rather than molasses. Bottled unsweetened in the agricole tradition, it adds a wine-cask finish to the usual oak maturation for an extra vinous layer.
Column-distilled and rested in ex-bourbon oak before its time in wine casks, it stays fresh and fruity rather than heavy: raisin, vanilla and citrus on the nose, then raisin, citrus and a clear wine note across a lightly woody palate, with spice and pastry on the finish. The wine influence sits gently over the fresh cane rather than dominating it. At 43% it drinks easily and cleanly, a fruit-forward, thoughtfully finished agricole that stays true to its cane-juice roots.
