Poisson Pere Labat Insula Nox 2013 is a single cask from the Poisson distillery on Marie-Galante, the home of Pere Labat. Distilled from fresh cane juice and matured in ex-bourbon wood for a decade, it is bottled at a gentle 43.5%, an easy strength for an aged agricole.
The maturation gives a round, oily texture and a notably pale colour for ten tropical years. Buttery sugarcane, apricot and orange lead the nose, the palate adds orange peel, light oak and an oily weight, and the finish is medium, dry and roasted with a citrus and herbal edge. A faint medicinal note keeps it just off the beaten track. This is an unusual, gently quirky aged agricole for drinkers who like bourbon cask spirit with a savoury herbal twist, suited to slow neat sipping.
