A nine-year Marie-Galante vieux from Pere Labat, aged in ex-bourbon oak and bottled at 42%, leading with mint, lime and pepper before cinnamon, ginger and a cooling finish of chocolate and grapefruit, dry and lively for its age.
Description
Pere Labat, made by the Poisson distillery on Marie-Galante, is a small, reputed agricole house known for classic high-proof blancs and well-judged aged bottlings. This Grand Diplomate is a nine-year vieux from fresh sugar-cane juice, matured in ex-bourbon casks and reduced to a gentle 42%.
The character is bright and aromatic rather than heavy. The nose is minty and peppery with lime and a rounded edge; the palate brings warm baking spice, cinnamon and ginger, kept fresh by more lime; the finish cools back toward mint, grapefruit, chocolate and lime. The bourbon wood lends structure without smothering the cane, and the result is a lively, dry Marie-Galante vieux that keeps its island freshness even after nearly a decade in oak. It rewards unhurried neat sipping from drinkers who like their aged agricole spicy and zesty.
