A three-year Marie-Galante agricole from Pere Labat, fresh cane juice aged in ex-bourbon, sugar-forward and inviting with butterscotch and dried figs over grass and orange peel, finishing on green pepper and spice, dry at 42 percent.
Description
Pere Labat, the reputed small-batch distillery on Marie-Galante, makes this Vieux from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice, aged three years in ex-bourbon. The island's agricole sits under IGP rather than the Martinique AOC and is often bottled higher by local custom, though this aged release comes in at a gentler proof, the bourbon wood softening a young vieux.
The nose is sugar-forward and very pleasant with butterscotch, dried figs and a sweet lift, while the palate turns soft and subtle, grassy with orange peel and confections, less sweet than the nose suggests. The finish brings green pepper, spice and a return of butterscotch, balanced and medium to long. Bottled at 42 percent, the natural sweetness reads as cane and cask rather than dosage, the grassy agricole core still present under the soft wood. A gentle, inviting aged agricole for easy neat sipping.
