Description
Poggio Landi sits in Montalcino, the southern Tuscan town that built its name on Sangiovese. This Rosso is the younger sibling to Brunello, made from organically farmed fruit and given a shorter ageing window so the grape's brighter side comes through. Montalcino's warm, dry climate and free-draining hillside soils ripen Sangiovese fully while the elevation preserves the acidity that defines the variety. The wine spends twelve months in French oak followed by three months in bottle, a measured regime that softens the firm Sangiovese tannins through slow oxygen exchange without burying the fruit under wood. The colour is medium ruby. The nose leads with sour cherry and red plum, backed by dried herbs, tobacco leaf and a savoury earthiness typical of the area. On the palate it is medium-bodied and fresh, the acidity keeping it lively while fine-grained tannins give grip on the finish. It drinks well now and will hold for a few years. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, ideally decanted for half an hour. It is a natural match for Tuscan beef, roast lamb and tomato-based pasta.
