Poggio Landi makes this Brunello di Montalcino from Sangiovese with long oak ageing. It shows ripe cherry, dark plum and a savoury depth of dried herbs, leather and tobacco over a firm, structured palate.
Description
Poggio Landi makes this Brunello di Montalcino from Sangiovese, grown on the hills around Montalcino in southern Tuscany. The vineyards sit on galestro and clay soils that drain freely and force the vines to root deep, while the warm, dry climate ripens Sangiovese fully and the altitude holds the acidity and aromatic lift that mark fine Brunello. Long ageing is the defining feature of the wine: thirty-eight months in French oak followed by six months in bottle, an extended élevage in which slow oxygen exchange through the wood resolves Sangiovese's firm tannins, integrates the oak and builds the tertiary aromas of leather, tobacco and earth that age brings. The fruit is farmed organically. The colour is deep garnet. The nose is layered, with ripe cherry and dark plum alongside dried herbs, leather, tobacco and a savoury earthiness. The palate is full bodied and structured, with firm, well integrated tannins, bright acidity and a long, savoury finish. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees and decant an hour ahead. It is built for roast and grilled red meats, game and mature hard cheeses.
