Description
Podere Sanguineto is a small, family-run estate in the hills of Montepulciano in southern Tuscany, where Dora Forsoni continues the legacy her father began in the 1960s. This Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is built on Sangiovese, the backbone of central Tuscany, with a little of the local red varieties, and is farmed organically. The estate stays true to a traditional, hands-on approach rather than an industrial one. The vineyards sit on the sand and clay soils of the Montepulciano hills, where altitude and a warm but ventilated climate give Sangiovese its high acidity, fine tannin and savoury, earthy character. The wine is fermented and matured in the traditional manner, the time in cask settling the tannins and lending a gentle savoury, leathery edge while keeping the bright fruit intact. The colour is a translucent ruby. The nose shows fresh cherry and redcurrant over dried herbs, tobacco and earth. The palate is medium bodied, with crisp acidity, fine grippy tannins and a long, savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. It suits grilled red meat, lamb and tomato-based dishes.
