Poderi Sanguineto makes this Rosso di Montepulciano in Tuscany from Sangiovese, aged in wood. The hillside vineyards give a savoury, cherry-fruited red with dried herbs and fresh acidity, a younger sibling to the estate’s longer-aged wines.
Description
Poderi Sanguineto farms the hills around Montepulciano in Tuscany, where Federico Forsoni's family has worked the land since 1958. This Rosso di Montepulciano is made from Sangiovese, the grape behind the area's wines, and sits as the fresher, younger-released bottling of the estate. The hillside vineyards of clay and limestone, with warm days and cool nights, give Sangiovese its hallmark combination of bright acidity, firm but fine tannin and a savoury, herbal character. The wine is aged in wood, which rounds the tannins and adds a little spice while leaving the fruit and structure intact. The colour is a deep, bright red. The nose shows red cherry and wild berries with dried herbs and an earthy undertone. The palate is medium bodied and lifted by Sangiovese's typical fresh acidity, with savoury, fine-grained tannins, a touch of plum and black pepper and a clean, food-friendly finish. Serve at 16 degrees. Its acidity and savoury grip make it a classic match for tomato-rich Tuscan cooking, grilled meats and hard cheese.
