From the DOC Bolgheri on Tuscany’s coast, this Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah comes from Podere Il Castellaccio. Twelve months in used French oak and six in bottle give ripe cherry, plum and a peppery, structured finish.
Description
Podere Il Castellaccio sits within the DOC Bolgheri in the province of Livorno, the coastal Tuscan denomination formally regulated in 1983 and opened to red wines in 1994. Orio is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah, the international grapes that define this stretch of the Etruscan Coast, where warm maritime conditions ripen the fruit fully while sea breezes retain freshness. The vineyards are farmed under respectful agriculture. The wine ages twelve months in used French oak barrels, chosen so the oxygen exchange softens tannins and adds savoury complexity without the strong toast of new wood, followed by six months in bottle to integrate. The colour is deep ruby. The nose shows ripe cherry, red berries and plum with tobacco and an earthy undertone. The palate is full bodied with ripe, structured tannins, good acidity and a peppery, oak-framed finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees and decant for an hour. It is built for roast and grilled red meats, mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses.
