Podere Il Castellaccio makes this Sangiovese on a Segalari hilltop along Tuscany’s Etruscan Coast, overlooking the sea. Farmed under respectful agriculture and aged twelve months in large foudres, it shows sour cherry, plum and a savoury, earthy finish.
Description
Podere Il Castellaccio is an estate above the village of Castagneto Carducci in the province of Livorno, on Tuscany's Etruscan Coast. Dinostro is a Sangiovese grown on a Segalari hilltop overlooking the sea, where the maritime breeze and warm coastal climate slow ripening and preserve acidity in this naturally high-acid variety. The vineyards are worked under respectful agriculture. After fermentation the wine spends twelve months in foudres, large oak casks whose low surface-to-volume ratio allows slow, gentle oxygen exchange without imposing heavy vanilla or toast, so the fruit and structure stay in the foreground. The colour is medium ruby. The nose carries sour cherry, plum, dried herbs and a leathery, earthy edge typical of coastal Sangiovese. The palate is medium bodied with firm but fine tannins, bright acidity and a savoury finish marked by black pepper and oak. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees and decant young bottles for half an hour. It suits grilled and braised red meats, tomato-rich pasta and aged pecorino.
