Description
Podere Il Castellaccio is a small organic estate run by Alessandro Scappini in Bolgheri, on the coast of Tuscany. Ardiglione is a single-varietal Vermentino, a grape that thrives in the maritime climate and free-draining coastal soils of this stretch of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Proximity to the water moderates the heat, and salt-laden breezes give the fruit its characteristic savoury edge. The wine spends four months in oak barrels, which broadens the mid-palate and softens the naturally high acidity without covering the fruit; the barrel adds a light creamy texture and a faint nutty tone. In the glass it is pale straw with green tints. The nose is citrus-led, with lemon, white peach and white flowers over a herbal note of thyme. The palate is dry and mineral, the coastal salinity clear on a long finish that closes with the bitter almond note typical of Vermentino. Serve well chilled at around 10C in a standard white wine glass.
