Podere Brizio makes this Rosso di Montalcino from Sangiovese, the younger sibling of Brunello. Twelve months in French oak and three in bottle give bright cherry, red berry and a savoury, herbal Tuscan character.
Description
Podere Brizio makes this Rosso di Montalcino from Sangiovese, the same grape and origin as Brunello but released younger and fresher. The vineyards sit on the hills around Montalcino in southern Tuscany, where a mix of galestro and clay soils drains well and the warm, dry climate ripens Sangiovese fully while preserving its bright acidity and firm tannins. Montalcino's relatively warm, sheltered position is what gives the local Sangiovese its depth. The wine is aged twelve months in French oak followed by three months in bottle, a shorter regime than Brunello that rounds the tannins through slow oxygen exchange and adds light spice while keeping the fruit fresh and the wine ready to drink. It is made to an organic specification. The colour is bright ruby. The nose shows cherry and red berry with dried herbs, a savoury earthiness and a touch of pepper. The palate is medium bodied and fresh, with firm but ripe tannins, lively acidity and a dry, savoury finish typical of Sangiovese. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It is built for tomato-based pasta, grilled red meat and Tuscan dishes.
