Description
Planeta La Segreta Bianco is made at Menfi in south-western Sicily from a blend of the native Grecanico with Chardonnay, Fiano and Viognier. The fruit comes from the Ulmo, Dispensa and Gurra vineyards, which sit between roughly 75 and 415 metres above sea level on a mix of pebbles, limestone, chalk and clay. The higher, cooler sites and the sea breezes off the Mediterranean keep acidity fresh in a warm climate, while the range of soils adds complexity to the blend. On reaching the cellar the bunches are gently pressed and the must is left to settle before fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature, a method that locks in the primary fruit and floral aromas and keeps the wine bright and unoaked. Grecanico gives citrus and herbal freshness, Fiano and Chardonnay add body, and Viognier lends a stonefruit lift. It is pale straw with green tints. The nose shows white peach, lemon and melon over white flowers and pear, and the palate is fresh and medium bodied, the ripe fruit carried on a clean line of acidity into a crisp finish. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees.
