Pinord makes this Penedès Reserva from estate Cabernet Sauvignon at its Montanyans vineyard. Twenty months in French and American oak plus two years in bottle give blackcurrant, plum and cedar over a warm Mediterranean structure.
Description
Pinord is a family winery founded in 1942 in Vilafranca del Penedès, beside the railway station that once carried its wine across Spain. Chateldon Reserva is a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate's Montanyans vineyard in the Penedès, a Mediterranean zone of warm, long summers and cold, dry winters. That heat ripens Cabernet fully, building the dark fruit and firm tannin the grape is known for, while the inland site holds enough acidity for balance. The wine follows a classic Reserva path: twenty months in a combination of French and American oak followed by a further two years resting in bottle before release. The two oak origins layer different spice, French adding cedar and a tighter grain, American bringing sweeter vanilla and coconut, while the long ageing softens the structure and develops complexity. Expect a full-bodied, deeply coloured red with blackcurrant and plum on the nose, framed by tobacco, vanilla, cocoa and a peppery oak spice. The palate is structured and ripe, the tannins polished by ageing, the finish long and savoury. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, and decant an hour ahead. Built for roast and grilled red meats.
