This selected-harvest red comes from Pinna Fidelis in Ribera del Duero, made from Tinta del País on the winery’s own vineyards at Peñafiel. Sixteen months in French and American oak give ripe blackberry, plum, vanilla and a coffee edge.
Description
Pinna Fidelis was set up in 2001 at Peñafiel in the province of Valladolid, with 200 hectares of vineyards planted mainly to Tinta del País, the Ribera del Duero name for Tempranillo. This Vendimia Seleccionada is a selected-harvest bottling drawn from the estate's own fruit. The vineyards sit on the high Duero plateau, where limestone and clay soils and a large day-to-night temperature range hold acidity and build tannin and colour while the grapes ripen fully under the continental sun. The wine ages for sixteen months in a mix of French and American oak barrels. French oak lends a finer, spicier frame, while American oak brings sweeter vanilla and coconut tones, and slow oxygen exchange through the wood settles the tannins. The colour is deep cherry red. The nose shows ripe plum and blackberry with red berry fruit, vanilla, toast and a hint of coffee. The palate is full bodied and modern in style, with ripe rounded tannins, fresh acidity and a warm, lightly peppery finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. It works with grilled red meat, roast pork and firm Spanish cheeses.
