Pinna Fidelis make this Crianza in Peñafiel from Tinta del País vines over thirty years old in Ribera del Duero. Fifteen months in French oak give a deep, structured red with ripe plum, sweet spice, chocolate and black liquorice.
Description
Pinna Fidelis was founded in 2001 in Peñafiel in Ribera del Duero, working 200 hectares of vineyards beside the Duero river to reflect the character of Tinta del País, the local name for Tempranillo. This Crianza comes from vines over thirty years old. Ribera del Duero sits on a high plateau where the limestone and clay soils and the wide diurnal swing between hot days and cold nights drive deep colour, firm tannin and concentrated dark fruit while holding acidity. The wine ages fifteen months in French oak barrels, where slow oxygen ingress through the staves polishes the tannin and adds vanilla, clove and toast, and the older vine fruit gives the depth to carry the wood. The colour is dense, deep cherry red. The nose shows ripe plum and black cherry, sweet spice, a hint of chocolate and black liquorice, framed by the warmth of oak. The palate is full and firm, with concentrated dark fruit, structured tannin and a long, spiced finish. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanted an hour ahead, in a large bowled glass. It is built for roast and grilled red meat.
