Description
Pinino Brunello di Montalcino is a red from the DOCG Brunello di Montalcino in Tuscany, made from Sangiovese Grosso. The estate lies on the Montosoli hill north of Montalcino, a well regarded site set in a natural amphitheatre that gathers warmth and light. It became one of the first Brunello producers around 1950. The soils here give Sangiovese firm structure and clear red fruit, while Montalcino's warm, dry climate ripens the grape fully and its altitude and cool nights keep the acidity fresh. The wine is barrel aged for the extended period Brunello requires, and this long maturation, through slow oxygen exchange, resolves the tannin and builds savoury, tertiary complexity. Colour is deep garnet. The nose shows dark cherry and plum over dried herbs, leather and tobacco, and the palate is full bodied and structured, with firm tannin, bright acidity and a long finish framed by earth and gentle oak. It has the balance to age for many years. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanted for an hour. It suits roast red meat and game.
