Spicy and dry, this Sardinian gin opens on intense juniper before fresh citrus and the island’s wild myrtle add a tart, scrubland depth. Silvio Carta builds it around regional botanicals, and you can taste the place in it: sun-baked maquis and sea air. The finish stays long and herbal, reminiscent of Mediterranean undergrowth after rain.
Description
Grifu comes from Silvio Carta in Sardinia, and it wears its origins openly. The name nods to the island's wild, unspoilt interior, and the botanical bill follows suit, high-quality juniper joined by myrtle, citrus and local herbs, the same flora that scents the Sardinian hillsides. Bottled at 43%, it has the backbone to carry that spicy, scrubby character without losing its freshness.
The nose is intensely juniper-led, with fresh citrus and a herbal spice behind it. On the palate it's expressive and balanced, bright citrus playing against spicy herbs while the myrtle lends an elegant, slightly resinous depth. The finish is long and pleasantly dry, with a tart note that recalls Mediterranean scrub. Pour it with a quality tonic, a lemon twist and a sprig of rosemary, or a slice of grapefruit to push the citrus.
