Pierre Morey, a former cellar master at Domaine Leflaive, makes this organic Monthelie from Pinot Noir in the Côte d’Or. Twelve months in French oak gives a fresh, earthy village red of red cherry, redcurrant and crushed herbs.
Description
Pierre Morey spent almost twenty years as winemaker at Domaine Leflaive before dedicating himself to his own small estate, a ten-hectare family winery in the Côte d'Or that he farms with his daughter Anne. This village wine comes from Monthelie, a quiet appellation between Volnay and Meursault whose Pinot Noir grows on gentle limestone and marl slopes. The site gives the wine its bright acidity and savoury, mineral character, and at 12.5 percent it stays light and fresh. The estate is farmed organically and biodynamically, with low yields and an emphasis on healthy fruit. After fermentation the wine is aged for twelve months in French oak barrels, a gentle regime that lets slow oxygen exchange soften the tannin and round the texture while keeping oak flavour discreet so the fruit and site lead. It is pale to medium ruby, with red cherry, redcurrant and wild strawberry on the nose lifted by rose petal, crushed herbs and an earthy undertone. The palate is light to medium bodied and elegant, with fine tannin, crisp acidity and a clean, mineral finish. Serve at around 15 degrees in a Burgundy glass. Lovely with roast poultry and mushroom dishes.
