Description
Pierre Morey is a Burgundy grower with a family winemaking history reaching back to the 16th century, and a former cellar master at the celebrated Domaine Leflaive. This Premier Cru comes from Monthelie in the Côte d'Or, a village neighbouring Volnay and Meursault whose Pinot Noir is grown on limestone and marl slopes that give the wine its firm acidity and savoury, mineral character. The estate is farmed biodynamically, an approach that emphasises vineyard health and lower yields. The grapes are fermented and the wine then aged for twelve months in French oak barrels, a relatively gentle regime that allows slow oxygen exchange to soften tannin and round the texture while preserving the fruit and site character. It is medium ruby, with a nose of red cherry and wild strawberry lifted by rose petal, crushed herbs and forest floor. The palate is medium bodied and elegant, with fine tannin, fresh acidity and an earthy, mineral finish typical of the Côte d'Or. Serve at around 16 degrees in a Burgundy glass, ideally decanted briefly. Classic with roast poultry, duck and mushroom dishes.
