Pierre Frick farms biodynamically in Alsace, and this barrel-aged orange Riesling from the Rot Murlé site shows apricot, beeswax and a smoky, mineral depth at a full 13.5 percent.
Description
Domaine Pierre Frick is a biodynamic estate in Alsace with a long record of minimal-intervention winemaking. Rot Murlé is a Riesling grown on a single site and made as an orange wine, fermented on its skins and aged in wood. Alsace sits in the rain shadow of the Vosges, a dry, sunny corner of France where Riesling ripens fully while keeping its taut acidity. The grape's natural structure is amplified by skin contact, which draws phenolics and a firm grip rarely seen in conventional Riesling. Ageing in old wood allows slow oxygen exchange that builds savoury, oxidative complexity without adding fresh oak flavour. At 13.5 percent the wine has real weight to carry that frame. The colour is deep gold to light amber, with a nose of apricot, beeswax and ginger spice over a smoky, mineral base. The palate is dry and structured, with dried-herb and earthy tones, a phenolic grip and a long, faintly saline finish. Biodynamic, natural, organic and vegan, with very little added sulphur. Serve at 12 to 14 degrees in a broad glass, with roast pork, poultry or a plate of hard alpine cheese.
