Pierre Frick is a biodynamic pioneer in Alsace, certified Demeter since the 1980s. This macerated Pinot Gris is fermented on its skins and barrel aged without sulphur, giving a rich, textured orange wine of apricot, orange peel and warm spice.
Description
Domaine Pierre Frick farms twelve hectares in Alsace and has been one of the region's leading biodynamic estates, certified by Demeter since 1981 and making sulphur-free natural wines since 1999. This is a macerated Pinot Gris, a grape that naturally carries weight and spice and takes well to skin contact. The fruit is fermented on its skins and aged in barrel, with the extended maceration drawing colour, phenolics and tannin from the grape to give the wine its amber hue and firm structure. Alsace's varied soils and sheltered, dry climate, protected by the Vosges mountains, ripen Pinot Gris fully, which shows here in the generous 14 per cent alcohol. Working without sulphur and with native yeasts allows a slow oxidative development that adds savoury depth and a slightly wild, complex edge. The biodynamic farming aims to keep the wine expressive of its site. Look for a deep amber colour and a nose of apricot, orange peel and ginger over honey and dried herbs. The palate is dry, rich and grippy, with stone fruit, a nutty, spiced character and a long, tannic finish. Serve at around 14 degrees in a broad glass. It suits roast pork, chicken and nutty cheeses.
