Description
Domaine Pierre Frick works biodynamically in Alsace, and this is Gewürztraminer made as an orange wine, fermented and macerated on its skins before ageing in old wood. Extended skin contact pulls phenolics, colour and tannin from the grape, turning Gewürztraminer's exuberant aromatics into something dry and structured rather than soft and floral. Alsace sits in the rain shadow of the Vosges mountains, one of France's driest wine regions, where long sunny autumns ripen the variety fully, here to 14 percent, while the mix of marl, limestone and clay soils lends weight and grip. The barrel ageing allows slow oxygen exchange that softens the texture and adds a savoury, oxidative edge. The colour is deep amber. The nose is unmistakably Gewürztraminer, rose and lychee turned towards apricot, orange marmalade and ginger, with dried herbs and a marzipan note. The palate is dry and full, the skin tannin giving real grip and a spiced, faintly honeyed length. Serve at 12 to 14 degrees in a generous glass, decanting briefly to open it.
