Pierfabio Mastronardi Mammamè Rosato 2024

Mammamè is the rosato from Pierfabio Mastronardi, who set up his Puglian winery in 2017 and works with a hands-on, natural and organic approach. The wine is built on Primitivo, the region's signature dark grape, with a small share of aromatic Aleatico that adds perfume. Puglia is hot and sun-soaked, and Primitivo ripens to deep colour and ripe red fruit, so the rosé is made by short skin contact and direct pressing to capture that fruit while keeping the wine fresh. Fermentation is in stainless steel at cool temperatures to protect the aromatics, with minimal intervention in the cellar in keeping with the estate's style. The result is a deeper-toned pink with a generous nose of ripe strawberry, cherry and plum lifted by the floral, faintly grapey signature of Aleatico. The palate is dry but full of warm-climate fruit, with enough weight and a gentle savoury grip to carry food, closing on red berry and a touch of pepper. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees with grilled vegetables, roast pork, tomato-based pasta and lightly spiced dishes.
