Can Rafols dels Caus grows this young Penedes white from Macabeo, Xarel-lo and other local varieties on a thousand-year-old estate near the Catalan coast. Made without oak, it is fresh and aromatic, with green apple, lemon and pear over a stony finish.
Description
Petit Caus Blanc is a young white from Can Rafols dels Caus, an old estate in D.O. Penedes with records going back to the year 992. The appellation sits in northern Spain between Barcelona and Tarragona, where vines ripen between the sea and the mountains under a patchwork of microclimates. That maritime influence keeps night temperatures down, so the grapes hold their acidity while flavour develops through the day. The blend is led by Macabeo and Xarel-lo, two Catalan varieties suited to warm coastal sites, with other white grapes filling out the aromatics. Vinification is straightforward and reductive: cool fermentation in stainless steel with no oak, which protects primary fruit and the fresh, direct aromas the region is known for. The wine is pale with a green tint. The nose is aromatic and clean, showing green apple, lemon and white flowers, with pear and a touch of melon behind. The palate is light and crisp, the acidity firm, and the finish carries a stony, saline edge from the coastal terroir. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees as an aperitif or alongside fresh shellfish and light salads. Certified organic.
