Oller del Mas makes Petit Bernat from organic vines at Pla del Bages in Catalonia, blending Syrah and Cabernet with the local Picapoll Negre. Just three months in used French oak keeps it bright, with raspberry, cherry and a peppery edge.
Description
Petit Bernat comes from Oller del Mas in the D.O. Pla del Bages, an inland Catalan zone of poor, stony soils worked organically by the estate. The blend brings together Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and the regional Picapoll Negre, harvested from certified organic vineyards. It was the first wine in Spain to earn a Carbon Footprint Certificate, recording the low CO2 released across its production. The wine spends a minimum of three months in second and third use French oak barrels, a short ageing that adds gentle structure without masking the fruit, since older barrels give little new wood character and mainly allow a slow softening of the young tannins. The colour is a bright cherry red with violet reflections. The nose shows red fruit, raspberry and cherry, with floral hints and a light peppery, herbal lift from the Syrah and Cabernet Franc. The palate is medium bodied, fresh and easy, with supple tannin and a clean berry finish. Serve lightly cool, around 15 degrees, and it works well with charcuterie, roast chicken or a simple tomato pasta.
