A 12 year old Hampden under the low-ester OWH mark from Perola’s Bellamy’s Reserve, a single cask at 59.5% with pineapple, marzipan and toasted coconut, easygoing and fruity despite full strength.
Description
Perola's Bellamy's Reserve line is behind this single cask of Hampden, an OWH mark from the 2012 vintage at 12 years. OWH is Hampden's lightest, lowest-ester recipe, so this is the distillery's gentle, fruit-forward side carried at cask strength.
Distilled on double-retort pot stills from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon wood, it offers more fruit than the clean mark might suggest. Glue, pineapple, marzipan and tropical fruit lead the nose, then the palate brings young wood, pineapple, ester and tropical fruit, with marzipan, almond and toasted coconut adding a pastry roundness. The finish carries pineapple, citrus, milk chocolate and banana. Certified unsweetened, with the 59.5% well integrated, it drinks as a relaxed, easy-sipping Hampden rather than an ester monster. For anyone who likes the distillery's gentler marks and wants more age and strength without going wild, it is a fruity, approachable pick.
