Perelada makes this young Garnacha from the D.O. Empordà in Catalonia, near the Mediterranean coast. Just three months in French oak keep it fresh and fruit-led, with raspberry, red cherry and a peppery, herbal lift.
Description
Perelada is a long-established producer in the D.O. Empordà, in the north-east corner of Catalonia where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean. Garnacha, here called Garnatxa Negra, is the region's signature grape and thrives in the warm, dry climate and the poor slate and granite soils that limit yields and concentrate the fruit. The strong Tramuntana wind that sweeps the region keeps the vines healthy and dry, allowing for low-intervention farming. This is a young, fresh expression, vegan in production, with only three months in French oak so that the bright fruit and the herbal, Mediterranean character of the grape stay to the fore. Cool fermentation and gentle extraction keep the tannins soft and the texture juicy. The colour is a vivid cherry red. The nose shows raspberry, red cherry and plum over black pepper and dried Mediterranean herbs. The palate is medium bodied with fresh acidity, supple tannins and a clean, savoury finish with a hint of earth. This is a red to drink young, served slightly cool at 15 degrees. It is versatile at the table.
