Description
Perelada Ex Ex 14 belongs to the winery's Experiencias Excepcionales range, small experimental bottlings released only when they meet the standard of the series. This one is a Garnacha from D.O. Empordà in northern Catalonia, made by natural vinification with native yeasts and no added winemaking products. Empordà lies between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, where granite and slate soils and the drying Tramuntana wind keep the vines healthy and give Garnacha its ripe fruit and savoury, herbal edge. Fermenting on wild yeast lends a wider, more textured aromatic range than cultured strains. The wine then spends fifteen months in French oak, where slow oxygen exchange settles the tannins and adds a light spice without masking the fruit. It is bright ruby with a deep core. The nose shows ripe red berries and plum, black pepper and a scrub of thyme and dried herbs that reads as clearly Mediterranean. The palate is warm and generous, the tannins ripe, with liquorice and a stony, earthy finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Good with lamb, duck and grilled red meats. Vegan and made naturally.
