Perelada makes Cigonyes from Garnacha and Syrah in the Mediterranean D.O. Empordà, a project that supports the reintroduction of storks to Girona. A short three months in oak gives a ripe, juicy red of blackberry, plum and pepper.
Description
Cigonyes is made by Perelada in D.O. Empordà, the warm Mediterranean appellation in the far northeast of Catalonia, where the name and the stork on the label mark the winery's support for reintroducing the bird to the wetlands of Girona. The wine blends Garnacha Tinta with Syrah grown under the strong sun and the dry tramontana wind that sweeps the region, conditions that ripen the fruit fully and give the wine its generous body and 14.5 percent alcohol. The wind also keeps the vineyards healthy and concentrates the grapes. After fermentation the wine spends a short three months in French and American oak barrels, just enough to round the tannin and add a light spice and vanilla edge while keeping the ripe fruit fresh and to the fore. It is deep ruby, with blackberry, plum and red cherry on the nose over black pepper, dried herbs and a touch of liquorice. The palate is full and juicy, with soft, ripe tannin, balanced acidity and a warm, spicy finish. Serve at around 17 degrees. A reliable partner for grilled meats and Mediterranean vegetable dishes.
