Description
Perelada sources this white from five plots in D.O. Emporda, a windswept corner of Catalonia between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean. The blend runs across Chardonnay, Garnacha Blanca, Gewurztraminer, Macabeo, Moscatel and Sauvignon Blanc, each variety picked from the site that suits it. The region is marked by the Tramuntana, a dry northerly wind that keeps the canopy healthy and cuts disease pressure, allowing slow even ripening. Soils range from slate to alluvial gravels, which lend freshness and a mineral spine. After fermentation the wine spends around ten months in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange through the staves and contact with the lees add texture, a fine spice and a rounder mouthfeel while the aromatic grapes keep their perfume. The colour is bright gold. The nose combines white peach and pear with citrus peel, white flowers and a light spiced lift from the Gewurztraminer and Moscatel. The palate is broad and structured, the oak framing ripe orchard fruit and carrying a long, faintly saline finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
