Perelada draws 3 Finques from three vineyards in D.O. Empordà, on sandy, sandy-loam and slate soils. A blend of Samsó, Garnacha, Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah aged twelve months in oak, it shows ripe strawberry, cherry and a firm, structured frame.
Description
Perelada is one of the most established wineries in D.O. Empordà, in northern Catalonia, a region defined by its mix of soils. As its name says, 3 Finques is sourced from three distinct vineyards: Pont de Molins on sandy soils, La Garriga on sandy loam and Espolla on slate. Sandy soils give lift and fragrance, while the slate at Espolla holds heat and lends structure and minerality, so the three sites together build a wine of more nuance than a single plot would allow. The blend brings Samsó and Garnacha together with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, a mix that balances Mediterranean ripeness with darker, firmer fruit. After fermentation the wine is aged for twelve months in French and American oak, which softens the tannins and adds vanilla, spice and a toasty frame. The colour is deep ruby. The nose is intense, with strawberry and cherry to the fore and subtle blackberry behind, lifted by oak spice and liquorice. The palate is full bodied and structured, with ripe tannins and a long finish. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanting young bottles. It calls for grilled red meat.
