Cava Varias, a century-old Penedès producer, make this young red from Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Merlot. Unoaked and fresh, it shows wild red fruit and a gentle spice, with bright easy-drinking acidity.
Description
Pere Punyetes Negre is a young red from Cava Varias, a family winery founded by the Miró family in 1918 at Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, in the Alt Penedès. It blends Cabernet Sauvignon with Tempranillo and Merlot grown in the pre-coastal climate of the Penedès, where summer highs can reach the mid-thirties and winters drop close to zero. The wide gap between daytime and night-time temperatures preserves freshness and aromatic lift in the fruit. This is made in a young unoaked style, bottled early to keep the wine bright and fruit-forward rather than building structure through barrel ageing, so the emphasis falls on primary red fruit and drinkability. It pours a clear bright red. The nose is expressive and clean, with wild red fruit, red currant and a delicate peppery spice that adds interest without weight. The palate is light to medium bodied, approachable and fresh, with soft tannins, juicy acidity and a clean finish. This is an everyday red built for early drinking and the table rather than the cellar. Serve lightly cooled at around 14 to 16 degrees. It suits charcuterie, grilled sausages and tomato-based dishes.
