Description
Penfolds is Australia's most famous winery, founded in South Australia in 1844, and RWT is one of its flagship Shiraz bottlings, built around Barossa Valley fruit. The Barossa's warm, dry continental climate ripens Shiraz fully, giving the deep colour, ripe dark fruit and generous alcohol that define the region's style, while old vines and low yields add concentration. The wine is aged eighteen months in a combination of French and American oak. French oak tends to add fine spice and structure, while American oak brings sweeter notes of vanilla and coconut, and the slow oxygen exchange through the barrel softens the tannins and knits the wine together. In the glass it is deep and dark, with aromas of ripe plum, dark chocolate and black pepper over vanilla, sweet spice and smoke. The palate is full bodied and rich, with ripe, firm tannins, a savoury leathery core and a long, warming finish. This is a powerful, structured Shiraz that will reward some time in the cellar. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanted, with grilled and roasted red meats.
