Penfolds makes this Chardonnay for its long-running Koonunga Hill range, drawing fruit from across South Australia. Rested on its lees, it is a ripe, balanced white with melon, white peach and apricot over citrus and a light creamy edge.
Description
Penfolds has been one of Australia's best known wineries for over 170 years, and the Koonunga Hill range is its established multi-region line, blending fruit from across South Australia. This Chardonnay comes from a range of sites across the state, from cooler coastal zones to warmer inland vineyards, a spread that lets the winemakers balance ripeness against freshness in the final blend. South Australia's warm, dry growing season builds generous stone and tropical fruit, while cooler-climate parcels and careful picking keep the acidity in line. The wine is rested on its lees, which adds body and a light creamy texture, filling out the mid-palate without heavy oak character. It is bright straw-gold, with a nose of melon, white peach and apricot lifted by citrus and a hint of vanilla. The palate is round and fruit-forward, medium in body, the ripe fruit balanced by fresh acidity through to a clean finish. Farming follows sustainable practice. This is an approachable, versatile white for everyday drinking. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. It suits roast chicken, grilled pork, baked salmon and dishes built around roasted root vegetables and squash.
