Penfolds Bin 28 is a multi-regional South Australian Shiraz from a winery with over 175 years of history. Blended across growing areas and aged 18 months in French and American oak, it shows ripe plum, pepper and dark chocolate.
Description
Penfolds is one of Australia's largest wine exporters, with more than 175 years of history. Unlike European estates tied to a single terroir, Penfolds built its name on multi-regional blends, drawing fruit from across several South Australian areas to add complexity and continuity between vintages. Bin 28 is a benchmark of that house style, a warm-climate Shiraz that gathers ripe fruit from sites chosen for their depth and concentration. South Australia's hot, dry summers and well-drained soils produce full, deeply coloured Syrah with high natural sugar, which carries the wine to 14.5 percent alcohol. After fermentation, Bin 28 spends 18 months in French and American oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange softens tannin and the American oak in particular lends vanilla, coconut and sweet spice. The colour is deep red. The nose offers ripe plum, cherry, black pepper and liquorice over dark chocolate and tobacco. The palate is full and warming, with ripe fruit, supple tannin and a long, spiced finish. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanted ahead of a meal. It is a natural match for roasted and braised red meat.
