Pelissero makes this Langhe Nebbiolo from the family’s vineyards across the hills of Piedmont. Nine months in oak softens the grape’s firm tannins while keeping its hallmark perfume of red cherry, rose and tobacco intact.
Description
Pelissero farms the Langhe hills of Piedmont, the home of Nebbiolo and a landscape on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Nebbiolo is a late-ripening grape, high in both tannin and acidity, and the calcareous marl soils and continental climate of the Langhe give it its structure and its haunting aromatics. Warm days ripen the tannins to maturity while cold autumn nights preserve the acidity and the perfume that mark the variety. This Langhe Nebbiolo is the approachable expression of the grape, spending nine months in oak barrels, where measured oxygen exchange softens the firm tannins and rounds the structure without burying the fruit. It pours a translucent garnet, paling at the rim, in the way Nebbiolo does. The nose is classic and savoury, with red cherry, dried rose, leather, tobacco and an earthy, herbal edge. The palate is medium bodied but firmly structured, with grippy tannins, high acidity and a long finish carrying liquorice and tar. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees and decant briefly. It suits red meat, game birds and mushroom dishes.
