The Pelissero family farms 42 hectares across the Langhe in Piedmont, a UNESCO listed landscape. This Barbera d’Alba Piani is made in stainless steel, which keeps the variety’s bright acidity and dark cherry, plum and pepper to the fore.
Description
Pelissero works 42 hectares of vineyard across the hills of the Langhe in Piedmont, a region on the UNESCO World Heritage List and the family's home for generations. Barbera is one of Piedmont's signature red grapes, naturally high in acidity and low in tannin, and the calcareous marl soils of the Langhe give it structure and savour. The continental climate, with hot days and cool nights, ripens the fruit while the cold nights lock in the grape's defining freshness. This Piani bottling is vinified and held in stainless steel rather than oak, a choice that preserves Barbera's juicy dark fruit and lively acidity rather than overlaying it with barrel spice. The wine is a deep ruby red with purple lights. The nose shows ripe black cherry, plum and red berry, with cracked pepper and a savoury, earthy undertone. The palate is medium to full bodied, with bright acidity, soft tannins and a clean finish carrying liquorice and a stony edge. The high acidity makes it a natural at the table. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. It is built for tomato-based dishes, cured pork and hard Piedmontese cheeses.
