Pedro Parra makes this organic Itata Valley Cinsault from old bush vines on granite soils, then rests it in cement to keep the fruit clean. Light and fresh, it shows cherry, raspberry and a peppery, earthy edge.

Description
Pedro Parra y Familia Trane is a red from the Itata Valley in Chile's Southern Wine Region, made by Pedro Parra from organically grown Cinsault. Parra built his reputation as a terroir consultant before returning to Concepción to work the granite soils he knows best. Decomposed granite drains sharply and warms quickly, giving low vigour and small berries with bright acidity, while the region's cool coastal influence and wide day to night temperature swing preserve freshness and slow ripening. Ageing in cement rather than oak keeps the tank inert, so no wood flavour or tannin is added and the fruit stays clear and direct. The wine is light in body and pale to medium ruby. The nose leads with cherry and raspberry over a savoury, earthy base, and the palate is juicy and fresh with fine grip, red currant acidity and a peppery, herbal finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, in a wide bowled glass; a short chill suits warmer weather. It works with roast chicken, grilled pork and lighter earthy dishes.
