Description
Pedro Parra y Familia P Pencopolitano is a red from the Itata Valley in Chile's Southern Wine Region, built on organically farmed Cinsault with País. Parra worked as a terroir consultant across several continents before returning to Concepción to make pure terroir wines from the area's granite soils. The País vines here are old and dry farmed, and decomposed granite gives sharp drainage, low yields and concentrated small berries, while cool coastal air and a wide diurnal range hold acidity and lengthen the growing season. The wine spends twelve months in French oak barrels, which soften the tannins through slow oxygen exchange and add a light spice frame without masking the fruit. Colour is medium ruby. The nose shows red cherry and plum with an earthy, dried herb edge, and the palate is medium bodied and fresh, with fine tannin, red berry acidity and a peppery, savoury finish carried by gentle oak. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees in a medium bowled glass. It suits roast poultry, pork and earthy autumn dishes.
