Description
This Tobermory was chosen and bottled by Malts of Scotland, a 10 year old from 2015, drawn from cask MOS25007 and bottled at 59.6%. The outturn was 309 bottles. Tobermory is the fruity, unpeated side of the only distillery on the Isle of Mull. The distillery was founded in 1798 by John Sinclair, a local kelp merchant, as the Ledaig distillery.
The spirit was worked through the boil ball stills for an oily, fruity make, for the waxy, fruity spirit Tobermory is known for. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. At a youthful age the fruit is lively and the malt waxy. Refill oak lets the fruity, waxy Tobermory character lead. Both malts feed the Scottish Leader and Black Bottle blends as well as single malt. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019. Mull's maritime climate works into the maturing casks over the years. It is one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland still working.
At a hearty 59.6% it carries real weight. A fruity, waxy sweetness, and the Oloroso adds figgy fruit and a warm nuttiness. Soft orchard fruit and wax sit behind the cask. The close is long, fruit over a soft oak. This is a waxy, fruity island single malt.
