Pazo de Señorans makes this Rías Baixas Albariño from old vines over 45 years on granite and sand soils. Aged 30 months on its lees and a year in bottle, it is rich and mineral, with white peach, citrus peel, beeswax and a saline edge.
Description
Pazo de Señorans is one of the reference estates of D.O. Rías Baixas in Galicia, and its Selección de Añada is a long aged Albariño made only in the better vintages. The grapes come from old vines over 45 years of age, trained on the traditional pergola system that holds the canopy off the damp Atlantic soil and spreads the leaf area to the sun. The vineyards sit at around 300 metres on poor sandy soils formed from decomposed granite, which drain well and give the wine its mineral spine. After fermentation the wine is aged for 30 months on its fine lees, then a further year in bottle before release. That extended lees contact releases mannoproteins that build texture and weight, turning a normally bright, aromatic grape into something broader and more savoury without loss of freshness. The colour is bright golden. The nose is deep and developed, with white peach, citrus peel, beeswax, honey and a saline, almost briny note. The palate is full for an Albariño, dry and mineral, carried by the grape's natural high acidity to a long finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a white glass. It suits richer seafood, poultry and hard cheeses.
