Description
La Comtesse is the prestige Albariño of Pazo de Barrantes, a sixteenth-century Galician estate in the Valle del Salnés owned by the Murrieta family. Its twelve hectares of Albariño grow on sandy, shallow, slightly acidic soils close to the Atlantic, where free drainage and the maritime climate give small, concentrated berries and the bright acidity and salinity that mark serious Rías Baixas white. This is a wine built for the long haul rather than for early drinking. After a careful fermentation it is aged for around two years, twelve months in large oak foudres and thirteen months in concrete vats, with extended time on its lees. The foudres are neutral, so they lend oxygen and texture rather than oak flavour, while the lees release mannoproteins that build a broad, waxy weight and deepen the wine without blunting its freshness. The colour is bright gold. The nose is complex, with white peach and apricot over almond, honey and a fine, bready lees character. The palate is full and textured, its saline, stony core lifted by taut lemon acidity into a long, mineral finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a full white glass.

Additional information
Serve with lobster, crab and scallops, or with richer seafood such as grilled tuna and baked salmon that match its weight. The saline, textured palate also works with roast chicken and creamy fish dishes.
