Parés Baltà makes Mas Irene in Penedès from Merlot and Cabernet Franc grown at altitude. Farmed organically and aged thirteen months in French oak, it shows ripe black fruit, cedar, herbs and a savoury, structured palate.
Description
Parés Baltà, a family winery in Penedès founded in 1790, makes Mas Irene from Merlot and Cabernet Franc grown on two estate plots, Finca Hisenda Miret at 400 metres and Finca la Torreta at 315 metres. Altitude matters here: the higher, cooler sites preserve acidity and slow ripening, which gives the wine freshness despite a Mediterranean climate that is otherwise mild and warm. The vineyards are farmed organically. Mas Irene ages thirteen months in French oak, whose tight grain lends restrained cedar and spice while gentle oxygen exchange through the barrel softens tannin and adds texture. Malolactic fermentation rounds the acidity and adds a savoury depth. The blend marries the plummy flesh of Merlot to the herbal, structured frame of Cabernet Franc. Expect a deep red with ripe blackcurrant and plum, cedar, dried herbs and a graphite edge. The palate is medium to full, savoury and structured, with fine tannin and a long, earthy finish. The wine is organic and vegan. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees and decant for half an hour. It suits roast lamb, beef and mushroom dishes.
